Creating Flexible Employment Roles suitable for Carers: a new initiative

Oct 28, 2022

Flexible Employment Roles

Jobsbank, in partnership with the Victorian Government, is creating flexible employment roles for carers.

Every day our team comes across employers reporting challenges in finding suitable staff to fill jobs – the most common reason being the lack of job applicants.

If the last two years have shown us anything, it is that we need to hire differently; in fact, employers who diversify their workforce are experiencing fewer labour shortages.

Australia’s Got Talent – and there’s a better way to find it!

Think about your business needs. An unpaid carer may not have been on your recruitment radar until now. But, through their lived experience, many carers may have unique skills that can help your business improve its economic performance; this could lead to mutual benefits and give you access to talent you haven’t yet considered. Our new initiative supports carers accessing employment and training pathways and helps employers create flexible employment roles.

Carers come from all walks and stages of life

They are mothers, fathers, children, sisters, brothers, partners, relatives, and friends. Across Victoria, more than 700,000 carers give their time and effort to looking after a family member or friend who needs them – whether due to chronic disease, mental illness, disability, or old age.

They often experience discrimination in accessing education, housing, employment and health care, and significant financial loss in lost wages and superannuation due to their caring role.

And while they may not be able to commit to full-time employment, they want to use their skills to support market shortages in part-time or shared roles.

Through their carer experience, many carers may have developed unique skills to help a business improve its economic performance. Usually, people who are carers are loyal and responsible; they show up for the job. They understand tasks and are used to risk manage, self-manage, work under pressure and respond to competing priorities. People who are carers learn to operate in complex situations; they also make great team member: they have empathy, compassion and resilience.

People who are carers have a lot of skills to contribute to the workplace but can require some support in getting there. Our team is working with employers open to create flexible workplaces that would be a suitable match carers.
